Vesuvianite, also known as idocrase, is a rare silicate mineral. It occurs as tetragonal crystals in deposits of limestone and skarn that formed in metamorphosis. It was originally discovered at Mount Vesuvius. The specimens found there as well as at Ala Valley near Turn, Piedmont produce some spectacular crystals.
